Jason Boodram Process Development Engineer, Patheon Inc. www.patheon.com Currently, Jason is involved in the planning and evaluation of the scientific and technical activities of the Process Development Department, Pharmaceutical Development Services (PDS). His primary contribution to PDS entails the development of pharmaceutical processes for cGMP batches. Within process development, Jason generates protocols and batch records, oversees manufacturing of developmental batches, and creates summary reports, which incorporates and assesses analytical batch data. He is currently the secretary of the Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) team, which is a branch of the Patheon Centre of Excellence initiative. The PAT team investigates systems for designing, analyzing and controlling manufacturing through timely on-line or at-line process measurements. Before joining Patheon, Jason graduated from Ryerson University in Toronto where he received the High Academic Achievement Award in the Chemical Engineering Co-op Program. Jason has held engineering co-op positions at Kraft Canada and Ashland Chemical Canada. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in human biology from the University of Toronto. Rhonda Tannenbaum Director of Commercialization, Ontario Genomics Institute www.ontariogenomics.ca Rhonda Tannenbaum joined OGI in June 2003. In her role as Investment Program Manager, she spearheads the marketing and commercializing of OGI-funded science, in raising private investments and in identifying cooperative initiatives within the biotechnology sector. She brings to OGI her experience as a Consultant with Trillium Therapeutics, a company developing therapies that restore balance to the immune system in conditions associated with abnormal and harmful immune responses. In addition, she spent many years in the high tech sector working on business development, strategic alliances and partnerships. Susan Grant Manager of Business Development, Merck Frosst www.merck.com Susan Grant is Manager of Business Development for Merck Frosst focused on licensing opportunities in Ontario and Western Canada. She graduated with a BSc (Pharm) from the University of British Columbia in 1983 and pursued a career in pharmacy before joining the New Zealand-based medical publishing house Adis International as staff writer. In 1992 Susan returned to Canada to complete a PhD in Pharmacology at McGill University before pursuing an MBA at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Susan joined Merck Frosst in 2000 as Manager, and then National Manager, in the Policy Planning Department of Corporate Affairs. Prior to her move to Business Development in May of 2004, Susan had been a member of the Central Region Corporate Affairs team where she has worked with external customers in health and industrial policy as Manager of Stakeholder Relations. One key aspect of that role was her support for the Biotechnology Council of Ontario and the Biotechnology Cluster Innovation Program, among others, to help improve the business environment for the commercialization of innovative health care research in Ontario. Paul Burgener National Research Council, Industrial Research Assistance www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca Paul Burgener graduated from Windsor University in 1968 as a Materials Engineer. His initial job was managing a small chemical instrumentation company, which was developing a rapid digital measurement analyzer for carbon in steel. Paul went on and started his first business, Quanta Systems to develop geophysical remote sensing technology, closed circuit television readers for the partially sighted and x-ray fluorescent solutions for mining. Paul then joined Barringer Research as the commercial product manager, developing magnetometers, heavy water monitors for CANDU reactors, and geophysical sensors. Paul also acted as a consultant for CIDA Kenya where he was the Chief Chemist of the Department of Mines and Resources, as well provided consulting services to a mine in Ivory Coast, West Africa through to the first gold production. He returned to Canada and started another business Questron Canada, which developed products based on commercializing university technology in the use of microwaves to accelerate chemical reactions. A spin off of this produced a new product using microwaves for pasteurizing citrus juice. Paul joined XRAL Laboratories a mineral analysis laboratory in 1996 as operations manager. Over the next three years, the company achieved ISO certification, doubled its revenues and net profits, and won a US Geological Survey contract. Paul’s previous work has resulted in 8 other spin-off companies. Krishna Pathiyal Research in Motion Limited www.rim.net Krishna graduated with magna cum laude distinction in engineering from the University of Ottawa and earned a Baccalaureate in Applied Science Co-op in 1993. He then attended the University of Western Ontario’s Faculty of Law, graduating in 1996. Upon graduation he articled with an Ottawa patent and trademark law firm, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1998, qualifying as a patent and trademark agent in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Tom Brzustowski Professor of Commercialization of Innovation, University of Ottawa www.uottawa.ca Tom Brzustowski was appointed RBC Professor for the Commercialization of Innovations in the School of Management of the University of Ottawa in October 2005. He had been appointed President of NSERC in October 1995, and reappointed in 2000. A professional engineer, he graduated with a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto in 1958, and a Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton in 1963. Tom was a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo from 1962 to 1987, teaching and carrying out research in thermodynamics and combustion. He served as Chair of Mechanical Engineering from 1967 to 1970 and as Vice-President, Academic of the University from 1975 to 1987. After that he served as deputy minister in the Government of Ontario from 1987 to 1995, first in the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, and later in the Premier's Council. Dr. Brzustowski holds honorary doctorates from a number of Canadian universities, namely, University of Alberta, Brock, Concordia, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Guelph, McMaster, Ottawa, Royal Military College of Canada, Ryerson, Victoria, Waterloo and York, and received the Engineering Alumni Medal from the University of Toronto. Justin Henry Cofounder, Intrigue Technologies www.intriguetek.com Justin Henry was the cofounder of Intrigue Technologies, a Toronto-based consumer electronics company that developed the Harmony Remote, a novel activity-based universal remote with internet programmability. The product became the market-leading universal remote control in just three years, and Intrigue went from a small Canadian company to being the dominant player in an industry segment previously led by giants such as Sony, Philips, and RCA. Mr. Henry took Intrigue Technologies through all growth phases, from start-up in 2000, through numerous rounds of funding, to its sale to Logitech in 2004 for $40 million (CAD). Mr. Henry is now Director of Engineering in Logitech's Remote Control division. Mr. Henry has a bachelor's degree in Engineering Science, and a Master's degree in Medical Biophysics, both from the University of Toronto.
